Relaminarization of elastic turbulence

چکیده
Elastic stress in viscoelastic flows, at vanishing inertia, can give rise to elastic instabilities and turbulence (ET), causing an increased frictional drag. Here we show that the measured drag correlates well with waves intensity wall-normal vorticity above onset of ET. Further, demonstrate increasing frequency Weissenberg number (Wi) results their strong attenuation hinders ET growth thereby reduction. Thus, this suggests a possible mechanism interaction fluctuations, leading reduction relaminarization phenomena low-Re.

Sudden Relaminarization and Lifetimes in Forced Isotropic Turbulence.
We demonstrate an unexpected connection between isotropic turbulence and wall-bounded shear flows. We perform direct numerical simulations of isotropic turbulence forced at large scales at moderate Reynolds numbers and observe sudden transitions from a chaotic dynamics to a spatially simple flow, analogous to the laminar state in wall bounded shear flows. We find that the survival probabilities...
متن کاملPatterned turbulence and relaminarization in MHD pipe and duct flows
We present results of a numerical analysis of relaminarization processes in MHD duct and pipe flows. It is motivated by Julius Hartmann’s classical experiments on flows of mercury in pipes and ducts under the influence of magnetic fields. The simulations, conducted both in periodic and non-periodic settings, provide a first detailed view of flow structures that have not been experimentally acce...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional elastic turbulence.
We report numerical evidence of elastic turbulence phenomenology in a two-dimensional periodic Kolmogorov flow. By direct numerical simulations of the Oldroyd-B viscoelastic model at very small Reynolds numbers, we find that above the elastic instability threshold the flow develops an elastic turbulent regime. We observe that both the turbulent drag and the Lyapunov exponent increase with the W...
متن کاملRelaminarization of RetÄ100 turbulence using gain scheduling and linear state-feedback control
The first successful application of linear full-state feedback optimal control theory to consistently relaminarize turbulent channel flow at Ret5100 with full state information and gain scheduling is reported. The actuation is zero-net mass-flux blowing and suction on the channel walls. Two key issues central to the success of this strategy are: ~a! the choice of the mean-flow profile about whi...
متن کاملElastic turbulence in shear banding wormlike micelles.
We study the dynamics of the Taylor-Couette flow of shear banding wormlike micelles. We focus on the high shear rate branch of the flow curve and show that for sufficiently high Weissenberg numbers, this branch becomes unstable. This instability is strongly subcritical and is associated with a shear stress jump. We find that this increase of the flow resistance is related to the nucleation of t...
